Effects of Sign Language Learning on Visual Domain
Deaf signers are well-known to easily identify the objects or movements on their peripheral vision. It has been shown that this is due to the simultaneity of sign languages rather than deafness in the previous studies. To further investigate the effects of sign language learning on the adult sign language learners, we measure the accuracy and the response time to the flickering objects. The project is led by Dr. Evie Malaia in Communication Disorders at the University of Alabama. We are about to finish our data collection and stay tuned for the results.

Machine Translation from Turkish to Turkish Sign Language (TİD)
We collaborated with the machine translation and robotic team in İstanbul Technical University to create an avatar translating from Turkish to TİD. We provided the linguistic explanations and annotations for TİD to model their endproduct, signing avatar. We annotated and tagged the recorded sign language data to provide the infrastructure, and guided the engineering team on the nature of sign language.

Machine Recognition of Turkish Sign Language (TİD)
We collaborated with the computer engineers in Boğaziçi University to improve the recognition of the manual signs in TİD in health and finance domains. Same manual signs were collacted from different signers and a non-signer to train the algorithm. The database is not only used to improve the algorithm for across signer variations, but also used to develop a TİD based computer-human interaction to be used as a welcoming and guiding booth in hospitals.
